Spotlight On Curriculum - 3rd Grade

From time to time our school will describe how teachers and specialists provide opportunities for deeper and extended learning throughout the curriculum. For many teachers, the most challenging aspect of a classroom is the continual analysis of student performance and the amount of problem solving required to meet individual student educational needs.

One way our 3rd grade staff challenge students in Reading is through an extension of learning called Literacy Circles. Literacy Circles focuses on developing vocabulary, comprehension strategies, and on understanding how literature is created. Groups of students read the same text -a story, poem, or novel then take an active role in discussing and writing about it. Students may be asked to identify important passages from a book and respond why they are important, think of ways their personal experiences connect to events or themes in a book, describe metaphors, or develop unique responses to events in a story.

Mckinney Fire Department Smoke Alarm Program

The McKinney Fire Department provides smoke alarms to McKinney residents in need. Residents who need help getting smoke alarms, installing alarms, or replacing batteries may contact the McKinney Fire Department at their non-emergency phone number, 972-547-2893. For more information contact Stacie Durham, Fire & Life Safety Coordinator, at 972-547-2893.

PE Reminder

For safety, students need to wear tennis shoes or sneakers when they attend PE. Students who wear boots or other foot wear not appropriate for PE should bring tennis shoes to school in their back packs. Students will be allowed to change into appropriate foot wear before PE. To find out which day your child attends PE, please click on the Specials Schedule link on this page.

Caldwell Receives Gold Performance Award

Caldwell has been recognized with a Gold Performance Award from the Texas Education Agency for receiving a Commended Rating in Math and Science for 2011. The rating means students demonstrated high academic achievement considerably above the state passing standard and a thorough understanding of the mathematics and science curriculum. More information about Caldwell's academic ratings in math, science and other subject areas can be found here.

New Statewide Tests Begin In McKinney ISD

This year begins the implementation of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), which replaces TAKS for all students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. STAAR Reading and Math tests will be given to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. 4th graders will also take a STAAR Writing test and 5th graders will take a STAAR Science test. While the content areas tested for are the same as TAKS, the tests are more rigorous and are given differently. Two major changes are: the tests are now timed and last 4 hours and 4th graders must answer two writing prompts over two days. Our website contains a link to information that explain the content of these assessments, which can be viewed here and (espanol aqui). Please contact your child's teacher, Mr. Clark, or Ms. Flowers if you have any questions or need the information printed for you.

Measures of Academic Performance (MAP)

Staff at Caldwell consistently look at student performance data to understand student needs and to fine tune MISD curriculum. The goal of looking at student academic progress is to set a higher learning standard and to provide an environment where students thrive.

MAP is a testing tool teachers use to record and monitor student learning throughout the school year. It provides teachers with information to make instructional decisions in the classroom. An overview of MAP for parents is located on the Parent Resources Page of our website, or can be found here.
