Colonial American Research Project

This project was created by Kass Bates, Anita Getz, & Betty Lavigne

The early European settlers who first colonized America came to this country seeking different opportunities. Over the next few days you will be investigating these colonies.  Your task is to select two of the original thirteen colonies and compare and contrast these two colonies. You will have an opportunity to use trade books, reference books, an online database, and specific websites to locate information needed. You will select five of the following eight questions to use in this comparison.

When and why was the colony founded?

What are some of the geographical characteristics of the colony?

What role did religion play in the settlement?

Were there significant colonial leaders, if so, what were some of their accomplishments?

How did they try to cure or deal with illness?

What was the relationship between the colonists and the Native Americans in this colony?

What were the economic conditions of the region?

Describe slavery in your colony or the attitude toward it.

You will use the data chart to help you record your sources of information, to record what you find and to summarize your ideas. After you have collected all of your information you will be building a table in Microsoft Word that will help you compare and contrast the information.

Final Project:

Once you have completed your table you will create a poster advertising the colony in which you would choose to settle. On the poster be sure to include information that tells your audience:

Which of the two colonies would you choose to settle in and why?

Group 1: will begin the research by using the trade and reference books in the library.

Group 2:  will begin the research using the Online Databases.

Group 3:  will begin the research using the website links provided.

Each group will have an opportunity to use all three sources of information. Your poster will be evaluated using this Rubric: Colony Poster Rubric.
