Exploring the
World: Spanish Explorers of North America
This program takes a look at the accomplishments of the first
Europeans to explore lands that are today in the United States of America. The
Spanish explorers came to find gold, claim new lands for their king, and
covert native people to the Christian faith. This fascinating program was
filmed on location at de Leon, Narvaez, Cabeza de Vaca, DeSoto, Coronado, and
Cabrillo between the years 1513 and 1543.
Grades: Gr. 2 - Gr. 5 Runtime: 20:52
New World
Explored, The
Prime time news in Europe during the year 1520 was the
existence of a New World across the Atlantic Ocean. The Spanish, Portuguese
and English had laid claim to some of this territory and France was now eager
to claim her share. This expansion of empires would be motivated by wealth,
politics and religion. Students will be introduced to the travels of the
following explorers: John Verrazano, Jacques Cartier, Hernando De Soto, Cabeza
De Vaca, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, Sir Francis Drake, Henry Hudson and
Samuel de Champlain.
Grades: Gr. 4 - Gr. 8 Runtime: 26:00
Exploring the
World: Christopher Columbus and the New World
This program examines the life of one of history's most
important and controversial figures - Christopher Columbus.
Through beautiful photography, students visit important historical sites in
Spain, and share in the fear and excitement of Columbus's first voyage
across the Atlantic Ocean. Columbus's historical role as the found of
Spain's first colony in the New World and as the discoverer of the first
reliable sea routes across the Atlantic are also presented.

Where Do You
Think You're Going, Christopher Columbus?
The children's book by Jean Fritz, with illustrations by Margot
Tomes, comes to life in this iconographic program. Jean Fritz's lively
narration provides a colorful portrait of the man who staunchly led his men on
ocean voyages to "learn the secrets of the world". And the best-kept secret in
all the world turned out to be America! Part of the Weston Woods Series.
Grades: Gr. 2 - Gr. 6 Runtime: 32:40
New World
Encountered, The
Columbus seeking the eastern coast of India, Cabot a
water passage to the Asian continent, Prince Henry a quick route along the
coast of Africa – these destinations defined the age of exploration as the
1500s dawned in Europe. Three major cultures, the Native Americans, Europeans
and the Africans were on the verge of encounter. This program shows how these
bold explorers were the catalysts for European control of the New World and
demonstrates the economic impact of their journeys. Historical figures also
include Leif Ericson, Hernando Cortes, Francisco Pizarro, Ponce de Leon and
Panfilo de Narvaez.
Grades: Gr. 4 - Gr. 8 Runtime: 26:00
Living History: Living in Spanish Colonial America
Early American history was shaped primarily by two nations:
England and Spain. Spain's role is often overlooked in spite of the fact that
during the Revolutionary War, Spanish settlements could be found across most
of the southern part of what is now the United States. Life in a Spanish
colony was quite different from life in an English colony. In this
twenty-minute program for grades 4-8 colorful historical reenactments give an
in depth look at what it was like to live at a Spanish mission in California
over 180 years ago. 1 22-min. Video; Teacher’s Guide with lesson plans,
student activities, discussion questions, and script, 13 Blackline Masters
